Robin Winstanley, sustainability and community director at OnPath Energy, says: “Creating green energy storage capacity like the Barnsdale Battery Energy Storage System is a crucial part of meeting the country’s future energy needs, while balancing the electricity grid and reducing the wholesale energy price during periods of peak demand will also help to provide consumers with access to cheaper electricity.
“While we’re keen to move this important project forward as soon as possible, especially after it received a recommendation for approval from Leeds City Council’s expert planning officers, we’re happy to withdraw the application at the Council’s request and to provide the additional information that has been requested before resubmitting.
“The benefits of co-locating battery storage capacity alongside solar energy generation facilities in this way are proven and accepted, and adding this battery storage to the approved Barnsdale Solar Energy Park site will ensure that the energy supply can be managed with maximum efficiency and minimum energy wastage.
“Alongside this, the overall Barnsdale Solar Energy Park ecology and biodiversity strategy will see the biggest increase in biodiversity for any renewables project within Leeds to date, and will achieve a biodiversity net gain of 107%, which is more than ten times the required outcome for a project of this type.”
