WORK to transform a neglected community space into a vibrant hub for all ages and abilities has been completed thanks to significant renewable energy funding and tireless local efforts.
Costing £225,329, McKirdy Park, based in Lesmahagow, South Lanarkshire, now has improved accessibility, upgraded play equipment, new picnic benches, and much more.
The project was made possible thanks to £25,000 of funding from OnPath Energy, through the Kype Muir Wind Farm Community Fund, which contributes to South Lanarkshire Council’s Renewable Energy Fund (REF).
It also received £93,000 in match funding from a range of sources, including other community benefit funds and local contributions, among them, £6,640 raised directly by the local community.
Ailsa Lorimer, Secretary at Lesmahagow Community Council, said: “The park has always been a focal point for our village, but it has never reached its full potential as we’ve never had the funds to take on any upgrades, until now.
“Thanks to the funding we have received, combined with the community’s dedication and fundraising success, we have been able to transform it into a space for everyone to enjoy.
“The collective effort behind this project has been truly incredible. As a community, we’ve long wanted to see McKirdy Park revitalised, and it has been a key priority in our action plan for some time.
“We are incredibly grateful to all of those who supported us in helping to bring this vision to life. The impact of this project will be felt across our community for a long time.”

The redevelopment includes upgraded pathways to improve accessibility, particularly for those with limited mobility.
A variety of new features including picnic benches, raised planters, and native tree planting will enhance the park’s appeal while supporting biodiversity.
Additionally, a mindfulness labyrinth offers a tranquil space for reflection, while outdoor gym equipment will encourage residents of all ages to stay active and healthy.
Aileen McCreadie, partnership and community manager at OnPath Energy said: “Creating safe and welcoming spaces in the heart of our communities is essential.
“These are spaces where children can play safely and create memories that will stay with them for years to come. They’re also places where neighbours can come together, helping to build a real sense of community.
“This project is a fantastic example of how renewable energy funding can have a meaningful and lasting impact on people’s lives.
“It’s crucial that communities remain at the centre of any renewable development, and the KMCP continues to demonstrate how it can help local groups turn their ambitions into reality.”
The KMCP was established to ensure revenues from the Kype Muir Wind Farm and Kype Muir Wind Farm Extension are reinvested directly into surrounding communities.
Since its launch in 2018, the KMCP has supported numerous initiatives that improve local life, such as accessibility upgrades at Sandford Village Hall and the introduction of a community bus service by Climate Action Strathaven.
Over their operational lifetime, Kype Muir Wind Farm and its extension (now owned by funds managed by Schroders Greencoat LLP) are expected to deliver more than £21 million in community benefits.
