Jobs and skills funding helps Strathaven student dive into elite sport

At OnPath Energy, we believe in powering more than homes and businesses — we power opportunities. Through our community benefit funds, we’re proud to support local people by investing in local jobs and skills.

One way which we do this is by partnering with South Lanarkshire Council to boost jobs and skills in the local area through dedicated fund supported by funds from our Middle Muir and Kype Muir Wind Farm Community Funds .

To date, the jobs and skills fund has supported around 2,000 people in South Lanarkshire. The initiative uses a tailored approach, from hands-on support like assisting with job applications, to provide college grants or practical equipment such as tool belts for apprentices.

Supporting local skills and job development

Powering opportunities

One inspiring example is Scott Fleming, an 18-year-old former Strathaven Academy pupil who began studying Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Stirling last in 2024. Thanks to a £500 grant from South Lanarkshire Council’s jobs and skills fund, Scott was able to cover essential start-up and travel costs, making his transition to university life smoother.

Now entering his second year, Scott has taken another big step forward. With additional support from the fund, he’s secured a place on the University’s High-Performance Swim Team — a move that brings him closer to his dream of a career in sport.

We want to ensure the next generation has the skills and knowledge to take our vision forward and drive the UK’s innovation in renewables. We collaborate with schools, colleges and community groups to promote STEM education and renewable energy. We also commit to delivering at least ten OnPath Education bursaries (worth £500 each) for every new project we develop.

Tommy Hall, who received wind farm funding to support his journey from unemployment to a rewarding career.

“The support from OnPath Energy and South Lanarkshire Council’s jobs and skills fund has been life-changing. It’s given me confidence, improved my health, and opened the door to helping others in my community.”

“The initial grant was a huge help when I started at Stirling. It covered costs that made settling in much easier. When I was offered a spot on the High-Performance Swim Team, I knew it was an incredible opportunity — but the monthly fees were a challenge. The extra support from OnPath Energy has lifted that burden and means I can focus fully on my studies and training.”

“Scott is a talented athlete with a real passion for sport. We’re delighted to help remove financial barriers so he can pursue his goals. This is exactly what our community funds are designed to do — create opportunities that make a lasting difference.”

Supporting people back into work

Supporting local job development

The same employment and skills initiative supported Tommy Hall on his journey from unemployment to a rewarding career.

Tommy first visited a South Lanarkshire Council’s jobs and skills drop-in session at The Old School House in Abington, looking for advice on getting back into work.

Facing personal challenges, he started by improving his health and fitness; with the fund covering six months of gym membership. From there, Tommy progressed to volunteering, supported with gym clothing and training costs, and completed multiple qualifications, including Level 2 Fitness and Instructing Physical Activity for Children.

Today, Tommy has donated over 100 volunteer hours and secured a permanent role at The Old Schoolhouse.

Supporting a just transition to renewable energy that is fair and inclusive for everyone

In 2025 our Middle Muir and Kype Muir Winds Farms paid £282,543 into South Lanarkshire Council’s jobs and skills fund.

The purpose of the fund is to help people living within 10km of our wind farms into employment by providing funds to support:

– Learning new skills/re-training
– Receiving employability advice and support
– Overcoming transport challenges – help with travel to work, training or childcare

This is what we call OnPath Together.
