Kype Muir Wind Farm

Learn all about our flagship renewables project, Kype Muir Wind Farm and the benefits it delivers for the local community, economy, and environment.

Scotland has some of the best wind resources in Europe. At OnPath Energy, we are harnessing that energy to help the UK transition to 100% renewable electricity.

Our 26-turbine wind farm, situated, approximately 5 km south of Strathaven, generates enough clean electricity to power over 63,000 homes each year.  Our flagship wind farm, Kype Muir has been generating green electricity since 2019. As well as supporting the UK in transitioning to 100% renewable energy, the community partnership model we developed at Kype Muir enables us to deliver long-term benefits tailored to local needs. Through the Kype Muir Community Partnership, communities take their own share of the wind farm revenues to invest in community-led projects and local causes.

Establishing our first Community Partnership

Creating value with communities

We created our first Community Partnering proposal at Kype Muir Wind Farm in 2019, with the aim of ensuring communities take their own share of the wind farm revenues to invest in their local area, tackling the issues specific to them. This group is the Kype Muir Community Partnership (KMCP).

The KMCP represents the five community council areas which are local to Kype Muir, and each area has two representatives on the panel. If you are interested in applying for a grant, your first action should be to contact your local community council to discuss your proposal and get their support through the process.

You can find the relevant contact details in the fund guidelines below, as well as more information on the great work the KMCP do in their local area.

Extending the wind farm

In 2021, OnPath Energy (at the time, Banks Renewables) received planning consent to extend the windfarm by 15 additional turbines. Full commissioning of Kype Extension was completed in early 2024.

Restoring peatland

One of our key aims at Kype Muir was to restore the surrounding peatland habitat that was destroyed or degraded by commercial forestry operations in previous decades. Peat bogs are one of nature’s climate heroes, they store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined.
