Design considerations

Since 2016, we’ve been busy meeting with and listening to the views of the local communities around the proposed Lethans Wind Farm site.

The site we selected does not lie in any protected area for nature conservation or any archaeological or historical designation. The site is also not highlighted within East Ayrshire’s wind farm guidance as being an area affected by cumulative impact of wind farm development.

The wind farm will be designed to ensure that any noise it produces is acceptable to local residents in their homes and gardens. Shadow flicker (a flickering shadow that can be experienced inside buildings) will not occur for any local residents.

Our path to success

There are many stages involved in developing a wind farm and many opportunities to get involved and have your say. Take a look at the main stages of the process and find out where we are currently at.

2016: Pre-planning consultation complete

To gain initial local feedback to help us shape the consultation process tailored to specific community needs.

2016 – 2018: Community consultations complete

Extensive engagement in person and online with the community to gather your views and feedback in the most inclusive and meaningful way.

March 2018: Planning permission granted complete

OnPath Energy (at the time Banks Renewables) granted planning permission for Lethans Wind Farm.

2018 – 2020: Further community consultations complete

Further consultations with the local community to fine-tune improvements to the plans and maximise the benefits and value for all.

June 2020: Further planning permission granted complete

Thanks to strong local consent, we gained planning permission for the updated proposal.

Summer 2024: Ground investigation work progress

We will complete on site ground investigation including boreholes, trial pits and a small amount of tree felling throughout the site to allow us to confirm the detailed design.

2025 : Identifying contractors and suppliers progress

We’ll be working with local businesses as much as possible to construct the wind farm. Early in 2025 we will begin the process of identifying contractors and suppliers.

2026: Start of construction

Timescales are heavily subject to grid connection. However, our current plans are to start construction in 2026 and have the project fully commissioned around Autumn 2027.

Project features

We listened carefully to local residents as well as consulting with East Ayrshire Council and statutory consultees to design the site that best aligned with local needs and wishes.

We reduced the number of turbines from 26 in the original application to 22. Five of the most visually prevalent ridge line turbines were removed and one new turbine inserted in a less visually-intrusive part of the site to improve the visual impact.
