Supporting a just transition

We are committed to delivering projects that bring local communities with us on the journey to a greener future. We’ve listened to local people and what is important to them, shaping a proposal that supports local jobs and skills, tackles fuel poverty and builds community wealth.

Making energy more affordable

Community consultation showed strong desire to tackle energy costs, particularly for those living closest to the wind farm.

Glen Water will fund a first-of-its-kind community pilot project in East Ayrshire that will provide fully funded energy-efficiency upgrades for homes within 2km, including insulation, modern heating and solar panels.

The pilot will make energy more affordable, create local jobs by using trusted local contractors and up skill local people to carry out insulation, solar and other energy related works. The aim is to scale it across nearby communities through the Glen Water community benefit fund, building community wealth and supporting fuel poverty goals aligned with East Ayrshire Council’s CoRE project.

Local jobs & skills

The community told us that they wanted to see the local economy benefit greatly from Glen Water Wind Farm.

Our proposals place a strong emphasis on local employment and our OnPath Together development approach prioritises local businesses, suppliers and contractors. We also require companies in our supply chain to commit to providing direct local employment during construction.

What Glen Water could deliver for the local economy:

  • Ten £500 educational bursaries as part of the project to support young people in education or training.
  • £30 million investment in the East Ayrshire economy over the lifetime of the project.
  • 183 full time equivalent job years during development and construction.
  • The launch of a developer forum and meet-the-buyer events in the area, aimed at increasing local investment.

Supporting young people with employment and skills

There is an opportunity for local young people to take advantage of the employment, training and up-skilling opportunities that Glen Water offers meaning they can stay close to home whilst contributing to the local economy.

Our Mill Rig Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire has provided young people like Emilia with valuable employment right on her doorstep. Watch her interview to find why she believes onshore wind projects offer great opportunities for young people in rural areas.

Making a difference in your community

If approved,Glen Water will deliver £10.3 million in community benefit funding over the lifetime of the wind farm, working in partnership with the 9CC Group to ensure investment is shaped and led by local people.

The community will receive a gifted 1% stake in the project, providing a long term income linked to its success, alongside investment in local skills with at least ten £500 educational bursaries as part of the project to support local young people in education or training.

Over £6 million has been channelled to local communities to date through our wind farm community funds across Scotland & England. Community funding helps communities like Abington revolutionise facilities and the lives of local people.

Abington Old School House is a great community led project that was made possible thanks to a £149,000 Renewable Energy Fund Grant with fund generated by our Middle Muir Wind Farm and managed by South Lanarkshire Council. Over £1.9 million has been awarded to community led projects through the REF by OnPath Energy wind farms.
